If a person claims that he has read Urdu literature and novels, and he has not read the novel Aag Ka Darya (آگ کا دریا), then he is not true in his claim. That is the importance of this novel in Urdu literature. Aag ka Darya is a landmark historical fiction Urdu novel written by famous novelist Qurratulain Hyder. First published in 1959, followed by its English version (River Of Fire) in 1998.

The novel addresses more than two thousand years of Indian civilization – In which the main character is time. Time is described as a “River Of Fire” that engulfs everything, and no one walks beyond it. The story starts from Chandragupta Maurya’s time and ends after the partition of the Indian subcontinent into two states (Pakistan-India). The story pauses at and describes several historical events.

The novel is really lengthy that the timeline can be divided into four major sections.

  1. The era of Chandragupta Maurya (400 BC).
  2. The fall of the Lodhi Empire and the arrival of the Mughals in India.
  3. The arrival and rule of the British in India.
  4. The partition of the Indian Subcontinent. (1930-1950)

The first part of the novel is preliminary, in which Gautama Buddha Nailambar appears as a symbol of Hinduism. Here you read about ancient Indian history and Vedic civilization.

As the story progresses, Gotham’s character is left behind, and a new character, Abu al-Mansour Kamal-ud-Din, takes over. He represents Arabic, Islamic, and Mughal culture. He strives for knowledge and is always in search of it. Here you get to read about the Mughal era in the Indian sub-continent. We find out how the Mughals settled in India and blended into the culture here.

The story goes on, and The British come to the subcontinent under the pretext of trade and sets foot there. They eventually became the country’s rulers. The main character in this part of the story is Sil Atele (سل اٹیلے).

After that, the story enters into the last and most crucial phase. This part of the story is the essence of the events of all other periods. Here we read about the partition of India. The various stages of the freedom struggle bring the novel to an end.
